Solving a Complex Commercial Partitioning Challenge with the Archskirt Floor-Mounted Sliding Door System

Creating Flexible Meeting Spaces at Ray White, Cranbourne

Modern workplace design increasingly demands flexibility. Open-plan environments need the ability to adapt quickly, transforming collaborative spaces into private meeting rooms while maintaining aesthetic appeal and functionality.

When Vision Corporate Interiors were tasked with delivering a new workplace environment for Ray White Cranbourne, they required a sliding door solution capable of closing off a meeting room from an adjacent kitchen and breakout area. The challenge was significant: the opening measured an impressive 8,840mm wide, and the building structure above the proposed opening was unable to support a conventional top-hung sliding door system.

To overcome these constraints, Vision Corporate Interiors selected the Archskirt Floor-Mounted Aluminium Sliding Track System.

The Design Challenge

The project brief required a partitioning system that could:

  1. Span an opening of 8,840mm.
  2. Provide a physical and acoustic separation between the kitchen and meeting room.
  3. Minimise the transfer of noise and odours between spaces.
  4. Stack neatly when open to maximise usable floor area.
  5. Accommodate compliant door hardware and handles.
  6. Operate smoothly and reliably despite the large panel sizes.
  7. Function without relying on overhead structural support.

Traditional top-hung sliding systems were ruled out due to insufficient structural capacity in the ceiling above the opening. A floor-supported solution therefore became essential.

The Archskirt Solution

The final installation comprised of:

  • Two fixed glazed panels.
  • Six sliding glazed door panels.
  • A clear opening of 6,358mm when fully open.

The Archskirt Floor-Mounted Sliding Track System was selected because it transfers the weight of the doors directly to the floor rather than relying on structural support above.

This allowed the design team to create an expansive operable glazed wall while maintaining smooth operation and long-term durability.

Engineering for Large-Scale Performance

Large sliding door installations present unique challenges. Maintaining stability, ensuring smooth operation, and preventing panel movement become increasingly important as opening sizes increase.

To address these requirements, the project incorporated a custom-routed ceiling guide system. While the doors are supported entirely from below, the ceiling guide provides lateral control, ensuring each panel glides smoothly and quietly without wobble or misalignment.

An additional challenge was the existing ceiling, which was not perfectly level. Through careful detailing and installation, the routed guide system accommodated these irregularities while maintaining precise operation across the full width of the opening.

The result is a remarkably smooth sliding action that belies the scale of the installation.

Heavy-Duty Hardware for Commercial Applications

The Archskirt system utilised heavy-duty roller hardware capable of supporting door panels weighing up to 200kg each.

This high load capacity provides designers and builders with confidence when specifying large-format glazed doors in commercial environments, allowing expansive openings to be achieved without compromising performance.

The system's floor-mounted design also simplifies structural requirements, making it an ideal solution where overhead support is limited or unavailable.

Improving Acoustic and Environmental Separation

Beyond creating a visual division between spaces, the doors were required to reduce the transfer of noise and cooking odours between the kitchen and meeting room.

To assist in achieving this outcome, the sliding panels incorporate an interlocking door profile. As the doors close, the interlocks guide adjoining panels together, making operation effortless while creating a tighter seal between panels.

This detail improves both acoustic performance and environmental separation, helping create a more comfortable and functional workspace.

A Flexible Workplace Solution

The completed installation provides Ray White Cranbourne with the flexibility to transform their workplace as required. When open, the six sliding panels stack neatly to the side, preserving openness and circulation. When closed, the system creates a substantial glazed partition that delivers privacy, acoustic separation, and visual connection between spaces.

The project demonstrates how the Archskirt Floor-Mounted Aluminium Sliding Track System can solve complex architectural challenges where conventional sliding door systems are not suitable.

For designers, builders, and fit-out specialists working with large openings, limited structural support, or demanding commercial environments, Archskirt's floor-mounted sliding systems offer a practical, elegant, and high-performance solution.
